How to Help
All net proceeds from my work are donated to either the Eastern African Medical Assistance Foundation or the SHARE Kenya Project in affiliation with the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University.
I have had a strong interest in international medicine throughout my training. I have worked in local clinics in Western Kenya as an intern in the SHARE Kenya program with the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. I also worked in and ran a small clinic on the island of Koh Phi Phi, Thailand after the Indian Ocean tsunami. This was in coordination with the Thai Island Foundation. I found those experiences to be very difficult, but also very rewarding.
Although my speciality of radiology is not immediately associated with Third World medical volunteer work such as surgery and OB/GYN, it does have an important role to play in those regions. In many African nations, there is approximately one radiologist per 1 million people. With such a discrepancy in care, the emphasis has been on training local physicians in radiology. The Eastern African medical assistance foundation is one of these programs that has done outstanding work over the years in teaching local Tanzanian doctors in the field of radiology. Founded by Helmut Diefenthal, M.D., Ph.D at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in the Central Highlands of Tanzania at the base of Kilimanjaro, the foundation has been a focal point of international radiology teaching, with physicians coming from all over the world to work with and teach the local Tanzanian radiology residents. The program has been so successful that the American College of Radiology has created a travel stipend so residents from The United States may have an opportunity to work in the area. Donations to the foundation help provide imaging equipment and pay for radiology operations at the KCMC.
SHARE Kenya is a 3-week clinical program in which students, faculty and clinicians deliver healthcare in rural Western Kenya. In 2006, participants shared in the celebration of a new free-standing clinic in Masara. The clinic was the culmination of a promise SHARE Kenya founder B.S. Bonyo, D.O. (’98) made as a child to help underserved Kenyans through medical care.
